How do you deal with bedwetting?

This has been a tough one for me. We have had about three children who have remained bedwetters longer than the rest, who wet the bed during potty training basically and that was it, except for the odd accident when they drank too much before bed.

We use mattress pads and covers. Well made ones are hard to find unless you are willing to fork out the big bucks.

We try to act as normal as possible. Sometimes we failed, especially when a child has woken us up in the middle of the night to say they were wet and their bed was wet. Not like we could send them back to bed. Not like we could send them back to bed without washing them up — yuck! So we were not always cheerful about this parenting task but it makes it much easier on the child if you are, obviously.

Bedwetting is more common than you would think.

13% of all six year olds wet the bed. 5% of all ten year olds. That's a lot when you think about it. Surprisingly, bedwetting also runs in the family. (Source:

Did you know that over 5 million kids a year experience bedwetting and it is one of the most common experiences during childhood development? Yep, it's that common.

We didn't always use the overnight disposable pants, but with these older children we do. We are far too busy now to be washing bedding every day like I did with some before I was working. Less stress, less work and less fuss is always better.

We do try to limit liquid intact after dinner, not necessarily in the summer though.

We have tried putting them on the potty before we go to bed, but it doesn't seem to make a difference for these two children like it did the rest during potty training so it is most likely their bladder development being delayed and that's ok.

Our other children are not allowed to draw attention to or tease these children who struggle with bedwetting.

We do not share their names in public or mention their bedwetting in public while they are present. I have blogged about it but I do not mention their names.
