Should you work outside the home or be a stay at home mom?

I think this is a very personal question and what is right for one family may not be what is right for another.

I've always wanted to be a stay at home mom. I was never really interested in a career. I felt my calling was motherhood. So when my husband and I got married we agreed that I would work while we did not have children and quit once we started having children.

I started working from home out of necessity when my husband was laid off in 2008. When my husband did go back to work he went back at half the income so I had to continue to work to supplement our income. I love being able to continue to stay at home and be here for my children. Though I have thought of getting a job outside the home during lean months, I really cannot imagine working outside the home. I guess I would if I had to, but I really prefer not to, if I can help it.

I think when you are discussing this issue with your spouse, I think you have to weigh all that is important to you, consider your needs financially, professionally, what your goals are as parents, and the needs of your child/family. Can you afford daycare? Etc., etc., etc. For some it's an easy decision, for others it isn't, but only you and your spouse can determine what is best for your family.

I agree, Lisa. Motherhood is hard enough without the judgement and bashing.
